Toyota to build a new plant to begin operations in the early 2030s.
On August 7, 2025, Toyota announced that it has decided to acquire land for a new vehicle plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture (Sadaho-machi area).
The company plans to begin operations in the early 2030s and will consider the vehicles to be produced.
Although details have not been disclosed, it is believed that the construction of a highly efficient and compact production line will be part of Toyota’s efforts to create a “plant of the future” that utilizes cutting-edge technology and provides an environment where a diverse range of human resources can play an active role.
Toyota’s nearby Sadaho Plant, which produced lithium-ion batteries for the Prius Alpha until fiscal 2014, is currently working to shorten lead times and improve productivity by creating facilities that utilize a digital twin,
The plant is closely related to electric vehicles, as it is currently working on the development of all solid-state batteries for BEVs and bipolar lithium-ion batteries for practical use in the late 2020s and building a mass production line for them.
The new plant is likely to produce electric vehicles powered by batteries developed and produced at the Chongbao plant, and may be positioned as a next-generation mother plant with greatly improved production efficiency.
While the new plant will improve production efficiency, many of Toyota’s existing plants are aging, and some of these plants may be closed in the future.
Toyota has positioned the new plant as the foundation for maintaining its 3 million vehicle production system in Japan over the long term, and after the new plant is up and running, it is expected that the technology will be horizontally deployed and the aging plants will be upgraded one by one.
If productivity per plant improves, the current 14-plant, 28-line system will likely become redundant, and it will be possible to terminate vehicle production at some plants and use the sites and buildings as resources for new growth.
Local governments have also shown their willingness to cooperate with Toyota’s new plant construction plans.
Toyota City intends to strengthen its support system for Toyota’s new plant construction, and has established a new project promotion team to support the new plant construction in close cooperation with Toyota.
