Powertrain Pathways from IAA 2025
IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) was held in Munich, Germany in September 2025.
European and Chinese companies exhibited prominently, and there was a flurry of announcements of BEVs, which will become the next generation’s mainstay models.
PHEVs and range extender EVs were also exhibited, mainly by Chinese companies.
In Europe, there has been a move away from a BEV-only policy to explore the possibility of a multi-pathway that includes internal combustion engines, and hybrid technologies, including PHEVs, are gradually attracting attention.
At this year’s IAA, ZF exhibited the 8HP evo, an improved version of its 8-speed AT (8HP) that is designed to be compatible not only with PHEVs but also with HEVs.
HORSE Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault and Geely, also exhibited a transmission that is compatible with HEVs.
PHEVs and HEVs are the “house specialty” of Japanese manufacturers.
In particular, HEVs (strong type) such as Toyota’s THS II and Honda’s e:HEV offer the best balance of product value in terms of environmental aspects such as fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions, as well as high convenience as a car.
As awareness of HEVs spreads, more opportunities will arise for Japanese manufacturers.
