Lessons Learned from the Xiaomi SU7 Crash and Flame
Late at night on March 29, 2025, a tragic accident occurred in China’s Anhui Province when a Xiaomi SU7 traveling at high speed in Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) mode (≠automatic driving) crashed into a concrete guardrail and caught fire, killing three occupants.
According to the pre- and post-accident vehicle data published by Xiaomi on Weibo, it is assumed that the driver had ignored repeated warnings from the system and continued to drive distracted. Accidents involving overconfidence that a car is not fully automated have also been reported in Tesla vehicles.
In the field of automated vehicles, though, there are reports of glamorous news making headlines, such as Advics leading the way in vehicle motion integration control for building cars in the BEV/SDV era and BYD developing the world’s first 1,000V-capable platform for BEVs,
On the other hand, the business integration of Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi Motors is in turmoil, and the Japanese share of the Thai market is gradually declining, with Chinese BEVs replacing and increasing their share.
In terms of technology, simulation model platforms are expanding, but shouldn’t the latest technologies such as AI-based driver monitoring be more widely used so that everyone can safely enjoy the convenience and comfort of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)?
