Battery development for ultra-rapid charging
On May 18, 2025, Formula E (FE), the premier race for electric vehicles, was held in Tokyo, Japan.
In addition to the introduction of EVO models, ultra-quick charging during races has been lifted in FE starting this season (Season 11). If the recharging time becomes the same as that of engine-powered vehicles, the use of BEVs may increase.
In China, a leader in BEVs, the focus of battery development is on high-rate recharging, and BYD is in the process of commercializing a 10C system.
Although the BEV market is beginning to show some variation by region and country, it is clear that Tesla and emerging Chinese BEV makers, who are ahead in BEVs, are expanding their market share with overwhelming price competitiveness and profitability in China and other open markets where they can export their products without tariffs, and that these leading BEV makers will also be able to compete with existing OEMs in the introduction of automatic driving and SDV. In addition, these leading BEV makers are gaining a competitive advantage over existing OEMs in the introduction of automated driving and SDVs.
Although Europe has imposed dumping duties on the growing imports of Chinese BEVs, the erosion of the Chinese BEV market has not been halted. In Japan and the ASEAN region, where Japanese vehicles have a strong market base, BEV and PHEV sales are steadily expanding in markets that were once dominated by ICE and HEV vehicles.
Considering the differences in energy and power source composition and automobile lifestyles in different countries and regions, it is inevitable that the road to carbon neutrality will differ from country to country and region to region. For the time being, it is inevitable that there will be a juxtaposition of countries aiming to electrify mainly BEVs, add PHEVs, electrify mainly HEVs, and re-intensify fuel-efficient engines using low-carbon fuels.
Along with an analysis of the global electrified vehicle market, in which shades of gray are becoming clearer, we will explain the current understanding and future of the electrified vehicle competition, with emerging BEV makers taking the lead in the move toward SDVs.
