Energy Policy Changes Indian Motorcycle Market

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular in the four-wheeled vehicle field, and it is expected that the replacement of internal combustion engine vehicles with electric ones will continue in the two-wheeled vehicle field as well, and the market for electric two-wheeled vehicles is gradually emerging.
Electric motorcycles, electric scooters, and electric bicycles are referred to as “light electric vehicles (LEVs),” and we spoke to them about the development of semiconductors for LEVs.

The market for electric motorcycles is expected to grow significantly in the next 5 to 10 years.
There is already a market for internal combustion engine motorcycles in Asia and South America, but air pollution and traffic congestion are problems in these regions, and the gradual shift to electric vehicles is expected.
Because electrification will increase the number of semiconductors installed in two-wheelers, the semiconductor market for two-wheelers is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12%, from $691 million in 2024 to $1,191 million by 2029.

India, aiming to become energy self-sufficient, has introduced policies to promote the spread of electric two-wheelers and domestic production of electric components in order to curb oil imports.
It has also introduced policies to promote the spread of bioethanol and biogas and their industrial development in order to promote rural industries and raise income levels.

In response to these policies, the motorcycle industry is also working to bring flex-fuel models to market, in addition to introducing the world’s first CNG motorcycles as well as electric vehicles.
As CNG and ethanol stations are being developed, the introduction of biofuel compatible models may become more active in the future.

We forecast the Indian motorcycle market by powertrain/fuel type in 2035, taking into account the government’s energy policy, the business strategies of major motorcycle/electric vehicle specialized manufacturers, and recent trends in the motorcycle market.
The industry is keenly interested in how far the world’s largest Indian motorcycle market will expand toward 2035, and to what extent electric, CNG, and flex-fuel vehicles will become popular.

In electric two-wheelers, as with EVs, the motor and inverter are extremely important key components that determine performance, such as driving range and acceleration.
Therefore, the motors and inverters must be highly efficient. Advanced battery management systems are also important.
