Degas moves into decarbonisation business to simultaneously solve Africa’s food crisis and climate change problems
Degas Ltd is aiming to create the largest carbon credits in Africa through the Degas Farmer Network, a network of around 15,000 farmers.
The company is entering the decarbonisation business of absorbing carbon dioxide through regenerative agriculture and the application of biochar, and generating the associated carbon credits. We believe this is a new business that will make the most of the farmer networks we have developed over the past three years, the data managed online, farming practices, technology and operational excellence.
We see the pinch of the climate change problem as a great opportunity to enter the decarbonisation business by absorbing carbon dioxide through African agriculture and farmers, who have vast amounts of farmland, and contribute to climate change mitigation while increasing farmers’ incomes through carbon finance.
The Degas Farmer Network is a network of about 15,000 small-scale farmers, mainly in Ghana, and Degas is working to improve the productivity of farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (sub-Saharan Africa), where the annual yield per hectare is 35% (*2) of the global average. Degas is a technology-based ‘farmer finance business’ that provides high-quality agricultural inputs, farming guidance, collection, storage and marketing in a single package. It produces the highest quality and largest quantity of maize in the country and contributes to improving food self-sufficiency in the country and on the continent.
More than 60 field agents at Degas collect and analyse farmers’ data using self-developed software, and Degas’ unique credit decision algorithms enable farmers to access agricultural inputs regardless of their environmental or asset status, thereby increasing their income and quality of life (QOL).
